Findings from a recent report by the Boston Consulting Group reinforce the importance of effective and substantiated green marketing and the benefits that companies can gain from this. The report, called “Capturing the Green Advantage for Consumer Companies”, found that despite the current global economic crisis, green products have become increasingly popular in recent times. With Melbourne and other parts of Southern Australia emerging from the most extreme heat wave over the past century, it seems that adapting to the effects of climate change is not just an issue we cannot avoid, but one we are already facing. Although you cannot attribute any one particular heat wave or extreme weather event to climate change, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change rising temperatures and reduced rainfall are both 21st century predictions for many parts of Australia, increasing the likelihood of more weeks like this occurring in the years to come. The insurance industry is one sector facing increasing risks as the 21st century effects of climate change continue to materialise. In his review on climate change Professor Garnaut said “the insurance industry will have to deal with an increase in the more ‘exceptional’ risks. These involve the possibility of extremely large losses, with the risks being highly correlated across many households, businesses or even regions" . Read full story |

According to the recently released Climate Confidence Monitor 2008 report, commissioned by HSBC, nearly 50 percent (48%) of people across the globe think their government should be taking a lead role in the fight against climate change. However only a quarter think their government is currently doing so, and this lack of belief in government action is beginning to take its toll. The report highlights that “without greater government leadership, people’s individual engagement with the issue is stalling”. Read full story |

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has confirmed that during 2007 atmospheric greenhouse gas levels reached record highs. At a concentration of 383.1ppm (parts per million), carbon dioxide rose 0.5 percent from 2006; nitrous oxide was up 0.25 percent and methane up 0.34 percent from the previous year. Read full story |
