Nick Palousis

Nick is an Associate with Sustainable Business Practices with experience in business analysis, risk management and engineering, mathematical and computer sciences project development and management. Nick has assisted on sustainability projects with business, government and educational sectors.

Prior to joining Sustainable Business Practices, Nick was part of The Natural Edge Project (TNEP) (a non-for-profit partnership for research on innovation for sustainable prosperity) hosted by Engineers Australia for three years. Nick was an Operations Coordinator and Research Officer and assisted the development of a range of projects focusing on education and training for sustainable development, including working with Companies, Industry Groups, Universities, Professional Bodies, and Government Agencies.

Nick has experience with the oil and gas industry assisting in the development of a sustainable development strategy facilitating the integration of environmental and social aspects into decision making, operational practices and communications. He worked on the Sustainable Industries Project, conducting interviews with business and industry associations, compiling findings into a suite of case studies. These were then were then featured in the Good Business South Australia Industry Leadership in Environmental Sustainability publication.

Nick has also worked with the mining industry to assist in the development and delivery of training material focused on sustainability critical literacy skills, relevant to the minerals processing industry and specifically focusing on the themes of eco-efficiency, whole system design, service and flow, and life cycle assessment. His experience extends to the development of educational material and delivery of training including projects with UNESCO/Engineers Australia, Department of Environment and Heritage, University of South Australia, Rocky Mountain Institute and Sustainable Living Challenge.

In 2006 Nick was announced Young South Australian of the Year, awarded for his work with TNEP, research with the University of South Australia, and achievements to date. Nick holds a BENG (Mechatronic) (H1), BSc (Mathematical and Computer Sciences) and currently holds positions as the University of South Australia's inaugural Southcott Scholar, and Senior Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Adelaide. Nick was awarded the inaugural Southcott Scholarship to undertake PhD research on sustainability in engineering and industry. His research involves the development of a risk management methodology to strategically consider at the design phase the multiple business benefits arising from designing and providing sustainable products and services.
